HEALTH PROFESSIONALS Health professions in the following fields are needed:
Primary Care (Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics)
Pharmacy
Ophthalmology/Optometry
Physical/Occupational Therapy
Dermatology
Dentistry
Other specialties are welcome but may be limited in the scope of practice due to the lack of facilities and ancillary support. We are now open to surgical specialties; however, advanced notice is required to arrange for operating rooms and hospitals, unless it's general surgery for minor procedures.
GENERAL VOLUNTEERS It is not a requirement to be a health professional to join the mission. All of the following are welcome to join:
General Students (students 18 and above may assist with technical operations of the clinics after passing a proficiency exam. Younger students may observe the non-surgical part of the clinics.)
Medical Students
Translators (Spanish to English, different Mayan dialects to English)
Parent Guardians / Adult Volunteers
Since one of the goals of this organization is teaching students about the medical field, all students 18 and above will be working and participating during the clinic (Intake and Vitals Station, Doctor Shadowing, Education and Material Handout Station, Pharmacy Station). Students must find a doctor to work with, ensuring the student-to-doctor ratio does not exceed 3:1. A doctor may not accept more than three students for the trip. Students will be trained under physician supervision prior to the trip and must pass testing to be able to attend the mission. Parents and other adults will be responsible for helping the clinics run smoothly and performing non-medical tasks, whether it's getting lunch for all of the workers, taking photographs, or controlling the flow of patients. If there are younger kids, they can assist in giving out small gifts to the Belizean children. Students are also expected to actively participate in long-term sustainable projects year-round, from concept to execution. We hope to inspire long-term change in the community and local healthcare, and prevent reliance on short-term clinics. Education is the most important factor of our medical missions and is important to learn properly during training.
